Rights Awareness
Empowering Rwandan adults with legal literacy, knowledge of constitutional protections, and the confidence to claim their rights — free from stigma and discrimination.
Our Approach to Rights Awareness
At HRI Rwanda, we believe that knowledge is the foundation of dignity. Too many Rwandan adults — particularly those in marginalized communities — are unaware of their fundamental rights or how to assert them when violations occur. Our Rights Awareness programme bridges this gap through accessible, community-centered legal education.
We conduct workshops, distribute resources, and train community advocates in Kinyarwanda, French, and English to ensure no one is left behind. Every session is designed to be interactive, practical, and culturally relevant — empowering participants with tools they can immediately apply in their daily lives.
Key principles guiding our work:
- Accessibility: Free workshops open to all adults regardless of education level
- Confidentiality: Safe, stigma-free learning environments guaranteed
- Community-led: Content shaped by the lived experiences of those we serve
- Practical focus: Real-world scenarios, reporting pathways, and actionable steps
Legal Literacy Workshops
Our flagship legal literacy workshops are half-day to full-day sessions held across Rwanda's provinces — from Kigali to the Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western regions. Each workshop covers:
- Constitutional Rights: Understanding the Rwandan Constitution and the fundamental rights it guarantees to every citizen
- Anti-Discrimination Protections: What the law says about discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and other grounds
- Reporting Mechanisms: Step-by-step guidance on how to report human rights violations to appropriate authorities
- Legal Aid Access: Information on free and low-cost legal resources available in Rwanda
- Self-Advocacy Skills: Practical techniques for speaking up, documenting violations, and navigating systems
In 2024 alone, we reached over 300 adults through these workshops, with 84% of participants reporting increased confidence in claiming their rights after attending.

Community Advocate Training
Beyond one-time workshops, HRI runs a Community Advocate Training Programme that equips passionate individuals to become long-term champions of human rights in their own communities. This 2-day residential training covers:
- Advanced legal literacy and human rights frameworks
- Counseling and peer support techniques
- Documentation and reporting of violations
- Community mobilization and event organization
- Stigma reduction and awareness campaigning
Graduates receive certification and ongoing mentorship from HRI staff. Many go on to lead local advocacy groups, facilitate workshops, and serve as trusted points of contact for those facing rights violations.
